Got up at 5:00 and left the hut before daybreak
at 6:45, because I wanted to get to At Arnaud as soon as possible to wash my
clothes. Overcast at the beginning of day turned to drizzle and steady rain
later. Luckily the track was easy to walk and had a smooth trip.
Dropped in relatively
new Red Hill hut for lunch. There was no fireplace there and dreary
unexpectedly. Mountain bike ride seemed to be permitted from this point. Saw
traces of the tyres on the track but didn't come across any bikers today. Walked out to the road and went last 8km along SH63.
Arrived at St Arnaud
township at 15:45, stayed at Travers-Sabine Lodge at $32 for a night. Since
having left Queenstown, just washed mainly undies by hands and it was the first
time in the 2 weeks to wash all my clothes by a washing machine. Went to town
(population 83 people) to have a light meal at a cafe and browsed a shop for
food shopping tomorrow. Whole town was deserted and very quiet and there were
only 6 people staying at the lodge because of the off season.
It is said the Richmond
Range, which I have walked in 6 nights and 7 days, was most challenging section
of the whole 3,000km TA track. Was tough but worth for the effort and came to
have more confidence. It was lucky that weather was relatively not bad and had
just a minor injury on the face. Hoping a good weather for tomorrow, went to
bed at 23.00. Walked 9 hours, 31km.
A JOURNAL OF 3,000KM TE ARAROA TRAIL, NZ: completed the North Island trail Sep to Oct 2017, and the South Island trail Apr to May 2018; fundraised $2,100 for RDWT during the walk. A TRUE JOURNEY OF AN OLD SCHOOL TRAMPER: relied on paper maps and a compass for navigation during the walk = no GPS, no smart phone apps, nothing modern & hi-techs! For own safety, rang family regularly to check updated track alerts and weather forecast.
