Reasons Why I Walked TA TAを歩こうと思った理由

I came up the idea to walk Te Araroa first in March 2011 after devastating two earthquakes in Christchurch and northeast of Japan to raise fund for victims. After having abandoned this idea because of family reasons, I decided to volunteer to clean up affected areas in Japan as well as to make personal donations to NZ & Japanese Red Cross. It was a mind boggling experience to visit tsunami swept areas only 2 months after the disaster.

最初に私がテアラロアに着目したのは、クライストチャーチと日本の東北で大きな地震が相次いで起きた直後の2011年3月のこと、歩くことで被災者への寄付を呼びかけようと考えたのがきっかけでした。家庭の事情で計画を断念した後、個人的にNZと日本の赤十字に寄付をして、日本の被災地の清掃ボランティアへも出かけましたが、津波からわずか2か月後の被災地を訪れるのは、心揺さぶられる経験でした。

There were many reasons why I decided to walk Te Araroa, but the main reason why I do it LAST year was because I will turn 50 years old next month. It is easy to say "One day I will"- but if I postpone the plan too long, I might totally lose the timing. The big birthday pushed my back forward to jumping into the unknown world out from my comfort zone!

自分がテアラロアを歩こうと思った理由はいくつもありますが、なぜそれが昨年だったのかという大きな理由は、やはり来月50歳になるという節目の年だからです。「そのうちいつか」と言い続けるのは簡単だが、気がつけば手遅れになっていかねない。節目の誕生日は、踏ん切りをつけて未知の世界へ飛び込む、格好の動機づけとなりました。

On 14 August 2017 Routeburn Track car relocation company Trackhopper.co.nz gave me the first pledge to match 10 cents/km donation to Routburn Dart Wildlife Trust. This means $300 donation when I finished walking Te Araroa's 3000km trail. Thank you so much for your support Trackhopper owners Michael Stone and Kiyomi Sada.

On 26 August, Guided walk & outdoor activity provider Queenstown Wilderness Adventures gave me the second pledge to match 10 cents/km donation to Routburn Dart Wildlife Trust. Feeding Takahe Chicks タカヘのヒナの餌やり体験

10 years ago, we had a chance to volunteer for DOC's Takahe rearing unit at Burwood Bush.  The rearing facility had an incubating room and rearing booths, fenced against the predators. We helped with feeding new-born Takahe chicks in every 30-60 minutes in a special way to avoid imprinting by human: wearing a Takahe puppet on hand, holding a tiny speaker that peeps like Takahe mum calls on a palm, putting hand in through one-way glass and offer chicks food on its red beak.

10年前に、タカへの卵をふ化させ大人になるまで飼育する、DOC（環境保全省）による特別の保護施設を訪れる機会に恵まれました。孵化したヒナが、刷り込みによって人間を親と間違えないよう、マジックミラー越しに人の姿を見せず、母親の声をスピーカーで流しながら、指人形を使ってえさを与えたり、害獣が絶対に入れないよう作られたフェンスが張り巡らされていたりと、様々な工夫を興味深く見学し、30分から1時間おきに与えなければいけないという、ヒナへの餌やりのお手伝いをさせてもらいました。詳しくはエコ・ニュージーランドをご覧下さい。

Takahe in the Wild 野生のタカヘ

Takahe is one of the most high profile native bird in NZ with just over 300 individual left, and their only wild population left in the world is Lake Orbell in Murchison Mountains near Te Anau, Specially Protected status conservation area.  11 years ago we had a chance to visit there as a part of DOC's Fiorldland National Park Summer Programme.  It was serene and inspirational place and we enjoyed every moment exploring the area.

タカへという鳥は、NZの固有種の中ではかなりよく知られた鳥で、現在の生息数はわずか300羽余り。テアナウ近郊のマーチソン山脈にある、オーベル湖の周辺が世界で唯一の野生状態での生息域となっていて、特別保護地域に指定されています。11年前に環境保全省主催のフィヨルドランド国立公園サマープログラムの一環でこの地を訪れることができました。とても穏やかでNZの環境保護に思いを馳せるのに格好の場所でした。
