Just south of Paekakariki, bluff incline of 30 degrees made by
waves erosion extended, and State Highway 1 and a railway were running along at the foot. 10km-Escarpment Track situated up on the cliff was absolutely impressive. Did not have an expectation that it would be that good, and thought it would be
a detour route to avoid the risk of walking along busy traffic. But the track
was surprisingly very well maintained and an easy to walk. There were picnic tables, seats, and
interpretation boards that explained fauna, flora and local history. A
magnificent view was sighted: extended and curved beach and Kapiti Island on
the North, and Pukerua bay on the South. It was a fine day and reef down below
was sparking by the sun. Although it was steep and there were a few wee dangerous
sections, I totally enjoyed walking this track with reasonable challenges. Besides seasonal flowers such as pink and purple marguerites were blooming in
profusion - it became one of the highlights of my TA walk in the North Island. Heard the
track was also called as "Stairway to Heaven", an apt saying indeed.
The walk went into outskirts of Wellington after Pukerua Bay, run on a well
maintained footpath along State Highway 1, and then led in to the City. Tonight and
tomorrow night, I was going to stay at John and Anneke's place, my old working
fellows when having worked as a Milford Track hiking guide. Called in to their
place on my way to drop off heavy stuff, and started to walk again with a
daypack towards Porirua.
John picked me up at the entrance of Colonial Knob
Walkway and drove back to their house. Their son Chris, who used to work with
me as a hiking guide, was visiting their place, and had a reunion after 10
years. Chris was teaching at a school in Wellington now. John and Anneke moved
into the property last June as they loved the view from the house. Was a
fantastic place with view of distinguished ocean from the windows and great
sun. Enjoying beautiful dinner, had a chat till late about our good old
memories. Walked 28km today.
