Rain that started to fall at dawn became drizzle at 9:00 and later
stopped. Overcast and grey rest of the day. After crossing Manawatu river, TA
route curved towards Massey University, carried on walking paths in a park, roads and
reserve named "Green Corridors" and then gradually went into Tararua
Mountains.
After about 20km walk, there was Kahuterawa Reserve that Palmerston
North City manages and camping was permitted there as well. Then trail went
into Arapuke Forest Park, and saw a banner and sign that said "TA
Halfway", middle point of total 3,000km. It took me 53.5 days to get here. Wondered how long it would take me to do the rest (200km in the North and
1,300km in the South Islands). Trail went through the forest and came into
Burttons Track, a DOC walking track. There were more than 10 'the usual'
annoying muddy sections there, but pleasure to walk on the proper tramping
track again since I have walked Tongariro NP surpassed the nuisance and I enjoyed
the walk.
As rain forecasted from this evening to tomorrow morning, tried to
get to Tokomaru river today. Kept walking on, and crossed knee deep a branch. After a little while saw grass land along the river that looked really comfy
for camping. Instantly changed my mind and decided to camp there tonight. Pitch
a tent at 17:30. Walked 36km today.
明け方に降り出した雨は9:00頃まで霧雨となって残ったものの、その後は止み1日中どんよりとした曇り空だった。マナワツ川を渡った後、TAのコースはマッセイ大学方面へ曲がり、公園内のハイキングコースや「緑の回廊」と名付けられた緑地を道路で結びながら、徐々にタラルア山脈へと入っていく。
20kmほど進んだところにカフテラワ保全地区という、パーマストン・ノース市が管理する保全地区がありキャンプもできるようだった。その後、道はアラプケ森林公園内へと入っていき、その山道の途中に"TA Halfway"の旗印と看板が設置されていた。全長3,000kmのちょうど1,500km地点ということらしい。自分はここまで到達するのに53日半かかったことになる。残り（北島200km、南島1,300km）には一体何日かかることやら。その後、林道になった道は最後にはDOCのトレッキングコース、バートンズ・トラックへ。お決まりのドロドロの箇所が何十とあったが、それ以上に、トンガリロ国立公園以来となるトレッキングコースを歩ける嬉しさが勝り楽しく歩けた。
今晩から明日朝にかけてまた雨になる予報なので、今日中にトコマル川までは渡っておこうと思い歩き続けた。ひざ上くらいの深さの支流を渡り、しばらく行くと川沿いに快適そうな草地があったので、あっさり変心して今晩はここでキャンプすることに急遽決め17:30頃テントを張った。本日の歩行36km。
