This morning, crossed Whangarei bay by boat at $15 with Duncan the boat operator who I have contacted since the day before
yesterday. Started walking 9:00. Very hard as I went against the strong wind on
sandy beach on high tide. According to the original TA trail map, Ruakaka river
ahead can be walked across - but yesterday Donna said the river is neck deep
even on low tide. Dropped in at Ruakaka township on a half way because of this
and also I wanted to vote (it was election day
today). Finish voting at high school nearby, and crossed the vehicle bridge
over the river that was brown and dirty. By the time going back on the beach,
the tide was luckily ebbing and sand became firm. Relatively easy to walk at
the shoreline. Talked with old people who were fishing with "lazy
fishing", a fishing float with a motor that moves up to offshore. They
said they can catch snapper, gurnard, kohai (black bass) etc. Did shopping at 4
Square in Waipu. Walked down the cycle way to Waipu Cove, and arrived at the
Holiday Park at 17:15. $20 for tent site. For dinner, cooked Udon soup noodle
with beef stock, dried wakame (karengo, seaweed), and dried shiitake mushroom that Donna
gave me. Was a quick and delicious meal. Walked 27km today.
今朝は、一昨日から連絡を取っていたボートオペレータのダンカンに$15でファンガレイ湾の対岸まで渡してもらい、9:00頃に歩き始めた。砂浜のコースが続くが、またちょうど満潮時でおまけに強い向かい風が吹いて一苦労。本来のTAのコース図ではこの先のルアカカ川を徒渉することになっていたが、昨日ドナから、館長のピーク時でも頸までの深さがあると聞いていたのと、今日がNZの総選挙で投票するためもあり、途中で浜辺からルアカカの町へと寄り道。高校に設置された投票所で無事投票を済ませ、車道の端でルアカカ川を渡ったが、茶色く濁っていて汚い川だった。幸い再び砂浜コースに戻った時には潮が引いていて、砂のしまった波打つ際を楽に歩けるようになっていた。噂に聞いていた「レイジーフィッシング」というモーター付きのウキに釣り糸をつけて沖合へ走らせて釣りをしていた老人二人を見かけた。鯛やホウボウ、ブラックバスなどが釣れるらしい。その後、ワイプの町を通った際に、4スクエア（スーパー）で買い物。ワイプ・コーブまでは自転車道を歩いたりして、17:15にやっとホリデーパークに着いた。$20でテント場にテントを張った。夕食にはドナからもらった乾燥ワカメとしたけ、ビーフコンソメでスープを作り、うどんを入れたが手軽でとても美味だった。本日の歩行27km。
