South Island Day 52, 27/05/18 〜 南島第52日・2018年5月27日

The cold was letting up after a few days and could get up at 6:00 easily.  Got myself ready to go at 7:30 but it was still dark outside - went back into my sleeping bag again waiting for sunrise. 

Started at 8:15.  Snow on the ground was only a few centimetres deep and no probs to walk.  After 3 hours walk, there was no snow around the track.  Low cloud hanging all the day with occasional drizzle cleared at night.  Arrived at Boundary hut at 12:00.  When having lunch there, 3 young ones on off-road motor bikes rode around the hut loudly and have gone.  

Walked 4WD road from this hut and arrived at Careys hut at 14:00.  Was still a bit early but decided to stay here, as the next hut was 27km away.  Collected firewood around and took water from the lake till 15:00, and then relaxed.  The hut looked cleaner than before and the shower booth turned to a firewood shed.  Must have been renovated?  The moon was nearly full and bright in the sky.  Went to bed at 22:00.  Walked 5.75 hours, 18km.

　数日ぶりの寒さが緩んだので、今朝はスムーズに6:00に起きられた。7:30には準備ができたが外はまだ暗く、再び寝袋に潜り込んで明るくなるのを待つ。

　結局8:15に出発。雪は数センチ程度で全く問題なく、3時間も歩くともう道沿いには見られなくなった。天気は1日低い雲が覆い時々小雨、夜になり晴れた。12:00にバウンダリー小屋に着き昼食を食べているとモトクロスバイクに乗った若者が3人現れて、騒々しく走り回って去って行った。

　ここからは四輪駆動車道路を歩き、14:00にキャリーズ小屋着。この先の山小屋はさらに27kmも先なので、早いが今日はここに泊まる。薪を集めたり、湖から水を汲んだりと15:00頃まで作業をし、その後ようやく寛ぐ。昔泊まった時に比べ、小屋がきれいになった気がする。以前シャワーがあった場所が現在は薪小屋になっていた。改装されたのだろうか。満月に近い月が夜空に明るい。22:00就寝。本日の歩行5時間45分、18km。
