From
today, my good old mates Kiyomi Sada and Mike Stone were coming along with me
on Motatapu track.
Left the campsite at 7:15 to be in time to meet them at the
carpark. Walked slowly and arrived at the track start at 8:00. A few mins later
they arrived by their friend's car. 3 of us started walking. Chatting all the
way, did not feel the heck long ascent that long... and felt as if I was doing a
different activity now, because I always walked by myself.
Arrived at Fern Burn
hut, the first hut at 10:30. Had a long lunch break for about 1 hour. Mike carried
tones of food like eggs, bacons, fresh veg and Japanese sweets and shared among
us.
Under the refreshing fine weather, arrived at the pass (1,275m) at 13:00. On the other side of the pass, was a shady and steep hillside facing to the
south with some snow. The path was frozen but managed to walk down safely.
Arrived at Highland Creek hut at 14:00 as expected. Had a relaxed afternoon
with my mates. Kiyomi cooked and treated us bacon & veggie risotto for dinner. My bush meals have been enormously upgraded. Felt being spoilt heaps... thank
you guys. Went to bed at 22:00. Walked 7.25 hours, 16.5km.
今日からモタタプ・トラックを、長年の友人、佐田清美さんとマイク・ストーンと一緒に歩くことになった。
スタート地点の駐車場で落ち合うことにして、7:15にキャンプ場を出発。のんびりと歩いて8:00頃着き待っていると、数分後に2人が友人の車で到着。3人で歩き始める。ペチャクチャしゃべりながら歩いていると気が逸れるのか、長い登りも思ったほど長く感じられない。いつもずっと一人で歩いてきたので、何か違うアクティビティをしているように感じられるほどだ。
10:30に最初の山小屋ファーン・バーン小屋に着き、ゆっくり1時間以上の昼食休憩。マイクが卵やベーコン、生野菜や和菓子など沢山の食料を担いで来て、いろいろ振舞ってくれる。
気持ちの良い晴天の下、1,275mの峠に13:00着。下りの急坂は日の当たらない南斜面で薄く雪が残り、地面も凍っていたが滑ることもなく無事下った。
14:30には宿泊予定のハイランド・クリーク小屋に到着できた。おかげで午後の寛いで過ごすことができ、夕食も清美さんがベーコンや野菜たっぷりのリゾットを作ってご馳走してくれ、普段の山での食事から数段アップグレードした食生活。ずいぶん甘やかされている気がする。二人に感謝。22:00就寝。本日の歩行7時間15分、16.5km。
