Jumped up
by the noise of rat's nibbling something when sleeping. Everything was fine
inside of the hut. Must have been trying to sneak inside.
Got up at 6:00, and
started at 7:45. Was frosty and pretty cold, but a very fine day. Walked across
knee-high Timaru River to the left and right about 10 times. Between the
crossings, walked up and down a few hundred metres at a time on a narrow
(15-30cm) path built on a steep hill on true left of the river, watching for
slip accident.
According to the comments on a visitor book of the hut I stayed
last night, it was easy and fast to walk on the river bed. That makes sense. However, my feet became numb after having crossed an ice cold river a couple of
times and did not feel like walking in the river for a long time... walking up
and down the hill was better as it warmed me up.
From 12:30 climbed up a steep
ascent to Stodys Hut (1,080m) and arrived at the hut at 14:15. Had enough time
to go to the next hut by sunset, but decided to relax, not pushing myself hard. Spread my sleeping bag and wet clothes under the sun and made firewood till
15:00.
When having a break, weather changed quickly - fogged at 16:00, hailed
at 17:30 and snowed at 18:00. The ground was covered by the snow in a minute...
whoa!! Would have been stuck on the ridge if I moved on further. Really
surprised. Got plenty of firewood thank goodness and made a fire. Sounded like
it is a 'den' of rodents, so hang up all my gears from the beam. Went to beda at
22:30. Walked 6.5 hours, 13km.
夜中にネズミがカリカリと何かを齧る音で目覚め飛び起きたが、室内は異状なし。外から中へ侵入しようとしているようだ。
6:00に起き、7:45出発。霜が降りとても寒いが良く晴れている。ティマル川を右へ左へと10回くらい渡渉し、その愛兄はいだり手の急斜面に作られた幅15-30cm程の細く傾いた道を、滑落に注意しながら時には何百mも登ったり降りたり。
昨夜の山小屋のビジターブックには「川底を辿っていく方が楽で早い」というコメントがあったが納得だ。しかしこの寒さでは川を2度も続けて渡渉するだけでも足の感覚が麻痺する位で、とても長時間水の中を歩く気にはなれない。却って、登り下りがある方が体が温まりありがたい位だ。
12:30頃からは胸突八丁の急登になり、一気に標高1,080mにあるストーディス小屋へ。14:15に着き、時間的にはもう一つ先の小屋まで行けたが、無理せず寛ぐことにし、寝袋や濡れた衣類を日に当てて乾かし、15:00位まで薪作りに精を出した。
その後一息ついていると天気が急変し、16:00頃には白く霧に包まれ、17:30には霰が、そして18:00頃からは雪が降り始めあっという間に地面が白く覆われてしまった。無理して先を急いでいたら、稜線上で立ち往生していたかもしれない。本当に驚いた。幸い、薪はたっぷり用意しておいたので暖炉に火を入れ、ネズミの巣窟らしいので所持品全てを梁から吊るしたり、万全の対策をして22:30に寝る。本日の歩行6.5時間、13km。
