Not
frosty but very cold, got up at 5:30 and started 7:30. When starting walking,
smelt something like fertiliser ahead, and soon found it came from a salmon
farm nearby - wondered what they feed the fish?!
Right after walking out from
Twizel town, a mountain Ben Ohau, that we've climbed before, was seen. The
place I was going to stay tonight located the other side of the mountain and a
lake, and walked towards the mountain all day. Just like the past 2 days, it
was a shared trail with Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. John Key, former Prime
Minister and Tourism Minister, proposed to build NZ cycle trails all over the
country, and TA was benefited from the idea a lot. There were some section to
share with cycle trail in the North Island, however this must be the longest of all.
Walking on a flat trail was and easy on lungs, but very tiring maybe because of
using the same part of feet. Beautiful golden coloured trees around Lake
Ruataniwha just took my breath away and could not take my eye off from the view
for a little while. Walked around Lake Ohau and arrived at Lake Middleton DOC
camp site at 15:00. There was no one else and had a peaceful evening. Went to
bed at 21:00. Walked 7.5 hours, 29km.
