It became rainy again from last night but luckily stopped just
before I started, and didn't fall again rest of the day. Forest ahead of Waitewaewae
hut was located on lowlands and diverse in vegetation: beech, kamahi, rimu,
broadleaf, lance wood, and various kinds of ferns. Especially it was impressive
to observe abundant kidney fern and filmy fern whose frond was so delicate and
transparent. Bird calls were lively, too - tomtit, grey warbler, and long-tailed cuckoo. Part of
track was the old tramline, and sleepers and old rails still existed in some
section. Arrived at Otaki Forks at 12:30 and had lunch. Walked to Puketua
track. Enjoyed the walk in this area - the forest was airy with sparse under
grow, and the track did not have steep ups and downs with good views. It was
already 18:00 when I finished walking and came down to the foot. Decided to
camp somewhere suitable to pitch a tent. Walked 23km today.
夜の間にまた雨が降り出したが、幸い自分が出発する直前に止み、その後は1日降ることはなかった。ワイテワエワエ小屋からの森は低地にあるだけあり、ブナに混じってカマヒやリムなどの針葉樹、ブロードリーフやランスウッドなどの広葉樹、そして多くのシダ類が茂りバラエティ豊か。特にデリケートではの向こう側が透けて見えるほど薄いコケシノブ科のキドニーファーンやフィリミーファーンがたくさん見られたのは印象的だった。鳥の鳴き声もニュージーランドヒタキ (tomtit) やハイイロムシクイ
(grey warbler) 、この時期らしくキジカッコウ (long-tailed cuckoo) など賑やか。トラックの一部は昔のトロッコ線路跡で、枕木や所によっては線路そのものが残っている場所もあった。12:30頃オタキ渓谷到着。昼食後すぐ次のプケアツア登山道へ。ここは下草があまり鬱蒼と生い茂っておらず風通しのよい気持ちの良い森で、上り下りの傾斜もキツくなく楽しんで歩け眺望も良い山道だった。歩き終えて麓の道に降りてきた時はもう18:00。適当なキャンプに良さそうな場所を見つけて野宿することにした。本日の歩行23km。
