At 7:00 got a courtesy transport of the backpackers to Mercer where
I finished walk yesterday. Started to walk TA walk. Went into farmland from
Skeet Road. 3km trail to SH1was tricky - lots of ups and downs, undefined and
knee-deep swamp, which took me nearly 2hrs to go through. At the end of the
section, found a someone's writing on wooden post "Bullshit Pass?" - grinned and agreed totally.
Next 3km along SH1 was not pleasant as drivers
passing by were looking at me
with an unfavourable curiosity. Some honked a horn to me that sounded like
teasing or cheering. The 3km took me 30mins to complete and walked down to
south along the Waikato River. Happily walked the section on a comfy stop bank. Met a guy Terry mowing grass with a weed-eater. He said from this point the
section would be covered by thick gorse bush. As he said, spiky bush all over
the place on my way that made me wonder which way to go. Terry worried about me
and came to take a look how I was going. A resident at Skeet Road, Terry
maintains the track voluntarily on his time off. TA is supported by people like
him...
Arrived at 15:30 at Rangiriri. A bit early to finish but decided to stop
now. Called in a cafe to ask if I could pitch a tent behind the building. Cathy
the owner from Queenstown allowed me to camp free of charge and offered me
complementary cuppa when I had their signature pie that was delicious. Walked
26km today.
7:00に宿の車で送ってもらい、昨日歩き終えたマーサーの町へ戻ってTAのコースを再開。スキート・ロードから牧場へと入っていく。ここから国道1号に戻るまでの3kmのコースが曲者で、アップダウンが激しい上に道も判りづらく、足が膝近くまで潜り込む湿地まである。踏破に2時間近くもかかってしまった。そのコースの反対側の入り口の木柱にマジックで「クソッタレ峠 (Bullshit pass)?」と書かれているのを見て思わず同感の笑みが漏れたほど。
その次が国道1号の高速道路沿いを歩く3km。何かドライバー達から好奇の目で見られている気がし（数回クラクションを鳴らされたが、冷やかしなのか声援なのか）いい気持ちがしない。こちらは距離は同じでも30分余りで抜け、後はワイカト川に沿って南下を続ける。初めは歩きやすい土堤沿いで調子よく歩いていると、草刈機で草を刈っているテリーというおじさんと出会った。この先はハリエニシダの繁茂がヒドイという。その通り一面トゲだらけの植物に阻まれ、道が分からずまごついていると、心配したテリーが様子を見にきてくれて、通り抜け方法を教えてくれた。聞くとスキート・ロードに住んでいて道の判りにくい場所を休日返上のボランティアで手入れしてくれているらしい。TAはこういう人たちによって支えられているんだな〜
15:30にランギリリ到着。少し早いが、パイが美味しいカフェの裏手にテントを無料で張らせてもらい、お茶をサービスしてもらってパイを食べた。オーナーのキャシーさんはクイーンズタウンの出身だそうだ。本日の歩行26km。
