Struggled to walk on the soft beach on high tide yesterday, so
woke up at 3:00 and left campsite at 5:00 to avoid it. Enjoyed walking down the
beach under the moonlight. Arrived at Ahipara before 8:00. Met Lyall with two
ladies who were collecting rubbish on the beach. Went to his house for a cuppa. Found we all used to or currently work for Air NZ - had a nice chat about work! Had a grocery shopping at a local shop. In just one hour, was told not to leave my personal belongings away from my sight 3 times
by different people! Sounds this place isn't safe like Queenstown. Had brunch
at cafe, and left Apihara before 10:00. Walked on the road for 7km, and got
into Herekino Forest. Huge Kauri trees took my breaths away - it reminded me of
the forest of Yaku Island, Japan. Pitched my tent at 16:30. Was good weather
with a few showers. Bedtime at 21:00. Walked 32km.
A JOURNAL OF 3,000KM TE ARAROA TRAIL, NZ: completed the North Island trail Sep to Oct 2017, and the South Island trail Apr to May 2018; fundraised $2,100 for RDWT during the walk. A TRUE JOURNEY OF AN OLD SCHOOL TRAMPER: relied on paper maps and a compass for navigation during the walk = no GPS, no smart phone apps, nothing modern & hi-techs! For own safety, rang family regularly to check updated track alerts and weather forecast.
