Overnight rain has stopped at dawn, and it turned to be fine
and warm all day. Had a slept in and it was already bright when woke up at
6:45. Late start at 8:30. Rest of the ridgeline walk was completed in 45 mins,
and went into Morepork track. An easy start turned into a challenging
mountainous one with ups and downs, including steep and muddy down hill where I
might have needed to slide down with bums. There was a dairy after getting out
the mangrove forest of Whananaki, and had an
impulse buying of an ice-cream etc there. Got some water there, too. It was
still 15:00, and decided to make my way to next town Matapouri. Walked on a
coastal way viewing beautiful coastal line and looked over the Poor Knights
islands. Arrived at Matapouri at 18:00 in dusk. Couldn't find the campsite
which was on the guidebook. Asked a local person passed by - he was kindly took
me to the farmer who would allow me to pitch a tent in his land. Got some water
from the farmer and camped in the paddock. Walked 30km today.
A JOURNAL OF 3,000KM TE ARAROA TRAIL, NZ: completed the North Island trail Sep to Oct 2017, and the South Island trail Apr to May 2018; fundraised $2,100 for RDWT during the walk. A TRUE JOURNEY OF AN OLD SCHOOL TRAMPER: relied on paper maps and a compass for navigation during the walk = no GPS, no smart phone apps, nothing modern & hi-techs! For own safety, rang family regularly to check updated track alerts and weather forecast.
