Got up at
6:00. Waited for light and started at 8:00. Got my shoes completely dry, and
was happy to walk with dry socks and shoes after a long time. Walked to out of
town, and hitched a ride. After 30 minutes of trial, Andrew Kelly, an elderly NZ
man from Timaru, gave me a lift to the point where finished walk yesterday.
Started walking at 9:00. Track followed a flat farm road to the first hut, and
it went through silver beech forest. After a little climb there were some snow
on the ground. Being thawed and frozen, snow was frozen hard and followed
footsteps on the crust.
Arrived at top of the pass, no views being surrounded
by trees. Walked down the hill through the forest and went on a tussock land
covered by 30-40cm hard frozen snow that my feet did not step through. White
frost that has grown by the cold weather these days looked beautiful. If snow
condition was like this in this area (500-600m above sea level), track would be
totally icy ahead in the Telford Tops ridges (1,000m). Decided to make a detour
on the road for a few days from tomorrow because I did not bring an ice axe and
crampons.
Footprints disappeared at the junction with Becketts Hut route, and
fresh snow covered the track from this point and on. Snow got softened as it
got warmer in the arvo, and it made me plough through the snow, slipping over
the ice and getting my foot in a hole hidden under the snow. Snow became
somehow shallower at 15:30, and walked as fast as possible.
Arrived at Aparima
hut at 17:15 just before dark. Tried to make a fire without success as all the
firewood was too wet to start the fire. AJ, a hunter from Invercargill arrived
in the darkness at 20:00 and had a flatmate after a long time. Thought taking
some water from a rainwater tank outside before it got frozen. No water came
out from the tap as it was already frozen at 20:30... man, are you kidding?! Went to bed at 22:00. Walked 8.25 hours, 23km.
6:00に起き、ほの明るくなるまで待って8:00に出発。ちゃんと靴を乾かせたので、久しぶりに乾いた靴と靴下で歩き始められるのが嬉しい。町の外まで歩き、ヒッチハイクを始めて30分ほどで、ティマルに住むアンドリュー・ケリーさんという年配のNZ人が停まってくれた。
昨日歩き終えた地点まで戻り9:00に歩き始める。一軒目の山小屋までは平坦な農道。そこからは銀ブナの森となり、登り始めるとすぐに残雪が現れた。一度緩んでまた凍ったようで、カチカチのクラストになっていて、何人かの足跡がついていたので、それを頼りに進む。
12:00頃峠の頂に着いたが、木に覆われ景色はない。下って森を抜けるとタソックの草地となり、上を歩いても踏み抜かないほど固く閉まった30-40cm程の雪が覆っている。連日の氷点下で成長した白霜が美しい。この標高（500-600m）でこれだと、この先のテレフォード・トップスの標高1,000m前後の尾根は、アイスバーンになっている可能性が高そう。アイゼンもピッケルも持ってきていないので、この時点で、明日から数日は道路を歩くことに決めた。
先行者の足跡はベケッツ・ハット・ルートとの分岐でなくなり、その先はバージンスノー。午後気温が上がり、雪が緩んでくると、かき分けて進まねばならなくなり、雪に隠された深い穴に足を取られたり、結氷で滑ったりして何度も転びながらの悪戦苦闘。15:30頃ようやく、気にならないほどにまで雪が減り、そこからは日没と競争のように急ぎ足で歩く。
何とか暗くなる前、17:15にアパリマ小屋に到着できた。暖炉に着火しようとしたが、薪がすべて湿っていてうまくいかず、諦める。真っ暗になった20:00頃、インバーカーギルの猟師AJが到着（編集者註：NZで狩猟は、トレッキング、釣りなどの屋外レクリエーションの一つです）。久しぶりのルームメイト。外の雨水タンクが凍結する前に給水しておこうと、20:30頃汲みに出たら、何とすでに凍っていて水が出ない。信じられない。22:00就寝。本日の歩行8時間15分、23km。
