An
unsealed road walk again today and there was no worry about getting lost.
Got
up at 4:00 and started at 6:00. It was frosty overnight and the ground and my
tent were sparkling with frost. Put rain jacket & trousers and gloves on
just like the same way I would dressed when walking over stormy Waiou pass. It was
not only because of cold weather but for safety reason: my hi-viz pants will
stand out for car drivers driving at 100km/h. However, it was a needless worry
as it was a quiet road that I came across less than 10 cars in 5 hours.
There were
several small lakes and no houses along the Harper road and it looked good for
freedom camping. Unfortunately, there were "no freedom camping"
signages everywhere - reminded me of an article that TA walkers in early days
did not respect the area leaving lots of wastes all around and made local
residents and Selwyn District Council "anti-freedom campers"... what
a shame!
This area was very scenic and tranquil in a different way from
Queenstown Lakes District. Traffic was still small even on sealed Coleridge
Road. Tried to hitch a ride for food supply in Methven - goodness gracious, no
cars at all. Got bored just standing at the same place, and started to walk and
hitch a ride.
After 1.5 hours trial and 5km walk, 10th car eventually gave me a
lift, then things started to work well. Got lifts by 4 different cars and
arrived at Methven at 14:30. Booked a local school bus (will give me a ride to
Glenock where TA starts on the other side of Rakaia river before they pick up
school kids) for next morning, $20 for a ride.
Stayed at Snow Denn Lodge,
$25/night after TA walker discount ($5). A female cat Honey who lived there was
very friendly and made me feel at home. Went to bed early at 21:30 as I will
wake up early again tomorrow. Walked 7.5 hours, 29km (+5km extra road walk)
本日の歩行7.5時間、29km(+道路5kmほど)。
